Labor Day's story so far

May 1882Carpenters' union leader Peter McGuire is traditionally credited with pitching the idea of a workers' holiday to New York's Central Labor Union, but historians have since found evidence that machinist Matthew Maguire, the union's secretary, was the true organizer.
September 5, 1882An estimated 10,000 to 20,000 workers marched from City Hall past a reviewing stand at Union Square to a park uptown, then capped the day with a picnic.
1887Oregon became the first state to put Labor Day into law, on February 21, 1887; Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York followed later that same year.
1894By the time Congress acted, roughly 23 states had already established their own Labor Day holidays independently, making federal recognition more a formal catch-up than a new idea.
Late 1880sThe 'no white after Labor Day' rule emerged among New York's Gilded Age elite as a class marker, using seasonal wardrobe switches to signal insider status.
2024US union membership fell to a record-low 9.9% of workers, continuing a decline from about 20% in 1983 — a striking contrast to the labor movement's strength when the holiday was created.

Born from the labor movement

The first Labor Day parade marched through New York City in 1882, organized by the labor unions. Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894.

Summer's bookend

Today Labor Day doubles as the unofficial end of summer, the last long weekend before school routines and football season take over.

A holiday born of a crisis

The federal holiday was signed in the shadow of the 1894 Pullman strike, when a railroad boycott paralyzed the country and federal troops were sent in. Days after the strike collapsed, President Cleveland signed Labor Day into law — a national gesture of reconciliation with American workers, rushed through Congress unanimously.
