How the tide pages work
Tide results live on each location's own page: today's high & low tides, an interactive chart, king-tide dates, and a year-ahead high-tide finder. Your Saved Stations appear above as one-tap cards (the ★ is your default); click the search box to see the stations nearest you, or type a coastal town, a state, or a NOAA station ID.
The chart is the date control. Drag the ‹ › handles to resize the bright band, hold the ⇔ button to move it to different dates (the chart zooms out to 30 days while you hold), and use Settings under the chart for the day count or a pinned 30-day view.

How fast does the tide come in? Speed is the hidden danger
What catches people isn't usually the height of the tide — it's the speed. The time from low to high is essentially fixed (about 6¼ hours on most coasts), so a big tide must move faster: a 30-ft range like Anchorage's climbs 6–7+ feet per hour at its peak, while a 3-ft tide creeps a few inches. Same clock, ten times the water.
And no tide rises steadily. Sailors' Rule of Twelfths is a rough teaching approximation — it does not accurately model every station or shoreline and should not be used to calculate safe access or return times: the rise comes in hourly shares of 1-2-3-3-2-1 twelfths — meaning half the entire tide arrives in the middle two hours on many coasts. A 10-ft tide puts on ~5 ft in that window, roughly six times faster than its first hour. If you walked out at low tide, the water coming back at hour three is a different animal than the trickle at hour one.
Where it gets dangerous: on flat beaches, mudflats and sandbars, a fast vertical rise turns into water advancing horizontally faster than you can comfortably walk — and it fills the low channels behind you first. In funnel-shaped estuaries (Turnagain Arm, the UK's Severn) the incoming tide compresses into a bore — an actual moving wall of water. Gulf of Mexico coasts get the opposite: one small tide spread over ~12 hours, about as gentle as tides come. Incoming tides can cut off beaches, rocks, sandbars and mudflats, and conditions vary substantially by location. This is background on tide physics, not a personal safety plan.
The largest tides in the U.S. and the world
The world record belongs to Canada's Bay of Fundy (up to ~52 ft); America's giants are Alaska's Cook Inlet — Anchorage, AK swings 26–30 ft — and Eastport, ME (~18 ft) on the East Coast. We wrote up the whole leaderboard, with live charts for every U.S. entry:
Where does the tide data come from?
Straight from NOAA CO-OPS, the official U.S. source for tide predictions. Heights are in feet above MLLW (mean lower low water, the standard chart datum) and times are shown in the station's own local time.
How far ahead can I see the tides?
Tide predictions are computed from astronomy (the positions of the moon and sun), so they're available about a year ahead. Use the date-range finder to list every high tide between any two dates — for general reference and low-risk scheduling only. Before any marine or shoreline activity, confirm conditions with official local forecasts, alerts, harbor guidance, and NOAA.
What is a king tide?
An informal name for the highest tides of the year, which happen when a new or full moon lines up with the moon's closest approach to Earth. In the finder, the top 10% highest tides in your range are marked with a crown — periods with some of the highest predicted astronomical tides of the year.
What actually makes the tide bigger or smaller?
The engine is gravity: the moon and sun pull the ocean into bulges. When they line up at a new or full moon you get the biggest swings (spring tides); at quarter moons their pulls partly cancel (neap tides), and the moon's closest approach (perigee) super-sizes things further — that's a king tide. River flow, the shape of the bay, and long-term sea-level cycles can also affect the actual water level, which is why real conditions can differ from the astronomical prediction shown here.
What are the highest tides in the world — and in the U.S.?
The world's largest tides are in Canada's Bay of Fundy, where the range between low and high can top 50 feet (it's outside NOAA's network, so it isn't listed here). In the U.S., the giants are Alaska's Cook Inlet — Anchorage sees swings around 26–30 feet — along with Southeast Alaska ports like Skagway, and on the East Coast, Eastport, Maine at roughly 18 feet.
