Father's Day's story so far

1909While listening to a Mother's Day sermon at Spokane's Central Methodist Church, Sonora Smart Dodd resolved to create a similar day honoring her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran who had raised her and her five siblings alone.

1916President Woodrow Wilson traveled to Spokane to speak at a Father's Day event, then pressed a telegraph button in Washington, D.C., to unfurl a flag there — informal presidential support, but Congress resisted a formal proclamation.

1924President Calvin Coolidge recommended that state governments observe Father's Day, urging fathers toward 'the full measure of their obligations,' though he too stopped short of a national proclamation.

1938Men's clothing retailers, organized as the National Council for the Promotion of Father's Day, began coordinating clothiers, tobacconists, florists, and stationers nationwide behind the slogan 'Give Dad Something to Wear.'

1966President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation for Father's Day on June 15, 1966, formally designating the third Sunday in June and calling for flags to fly on government buildings.
