A mixtape reaches Dr. Dre

Calvin Broadus was a Long Beach kid freestyling with his friend Warren G when Warren -- Dr. Dre's stepbrother -- played Dre one of their homemade tapes. Dre called Snoop in, put him on 1992's 'Deep Cover' and all over The Chronic, and by the time Doggystyle arrived in November 1993 the anticipation was so huge it debuted at No. 1, selling 806,858 copies in its first week -- then the biggest opening ever for a debut artist.

From Doggystyle to the Olympic torch

Few careers reinvent like Snoop's. Doggystyle went quadruple platinum, yet his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, 'Drop It Like It's Hot' with Pharrell, came 11 years later in 2004. In 2022 he bought Death Row Records, the label that launched him. And in 2024 he carried the Olympic torch through Saint-Denis and became the breakout star of NBC's Paris coverage, cheerfully commentating everything from dressage to swimming alongside his friend Martha Stewart.

Coach Snoop's league

In 2005 Snoop founded the Snoop Youth Football League, a nonprofit giving inner-city kids ages 5 to 13 a place to play football and cheer while keeping academics front and center. Thousands of kids have come through, and more than a dozen have reached the NFL -- including Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud, who joined the SYFL's Pomona Steelers at age 12, plus JuJu Smith-Schuster and Romeo Doubs. Snoop likes to add that the league has also produced doctors, lawyers, and a Rhodes scholar.
