In the fall of 2012, an 18-year-old Ohtani announced he would skip Japanese pro ball and jump straight to MLB. Every NPB club backed off - except the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, who drafted him anyway and won him over with a roughly 30-page, data-packed presentation titled 'The Path to Realizing Shohei Ohtani's Dream.' Their bold promise: he could pitch AND hit, something modern baseball had written off. Five seasons later he had a 2016 Japan Series ring, and the two-way experiment was ready for America.

The night 50-50 became real

On September 19, 2024, in Miami, Ohtani had maybe the greatest single game ever: 6-for-6 with three home runs, two stolen bases, and 10 RBI - becoming the first player in MLB history with 50 homers and 50 steals in a season. He finished at .310 with 54 homers and 59 steals, in year one of a then-record $700 million Dodgers contract. He owns four MVP awards, all unanimous - no other player has even two - plus back-to-back World Series titles in 2024 and 2025.

A glove for every school in Japan

In November 2023, Ohtani announced he was donating about 60,000 youth baseball gloves - three per school, including left-handed models - to all of Japan's roughly 20,000 elementary schools. 'I'm hoping the kids can spend their days happily with a lot of energy through baseball,' he wrote. It was classic Ohtani: no gala, no naming rights, just gloves showing up at every school in the country so the next kid from a small town like Oshu can start playing catch.
