The pitcher who picked football

Mahomes grew up in big-league clubhouses while his father Pat pitched in MLB, and in 2014 the Detroit Tigers drafted the Whitehouse High righty in the 37th round. He turned them down for Texas Tech, where coach Kliff Kingsbury eventually talked him into going all-in on football. Good call: he led the nation with 5,052 passing yards in 2016, and in 2017 the Chiefs traded two first-round picks' worth of capital to move up and grab him at No. 10 -- their first first-round quarterback since 1983.

Fifty touchdowns, then the trophies

In his first season as a starter, Mahomes threw 50 touchdown passes with 5,097 yards and won NFL MVP at age 23. Then came the hardware: Super Bowl titles in the 2019, 2022, and 2023 seasons, with Mahomes named Super Bowl MVP all three times, and the LVII-LVIII repeat was the NFL's first back-to-back championship since the 2003-04 Patriots. His trademark is the impossible comeback -- Kansas City trailed by double digits in each game of the 2019 title run and won anyway.

15 and the Mahomies

In 2019 Mahomes launched 15 and the Mahomies, a foundation focused on kids' health, wellness, and under-resourced communities. In 2023 he and his wife Brittany committed $1.625 million to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, spread across Greater Kansas City, Lubbock, and his East Texas hometowns of Tyler and Whitehouse -- funding scholarships for up to 300 kids a year. The foundation also pledges $1,500 to the Clubs for every regular-season touchdown he throws, so every score counts twice.
