The longest-serving heir apparent in British history, Charles acceded to the throne in September 2022 and was crowned in May 2023. He spent five decades championing environmental causes and founded the youth charity now known as The King's Trust.

Seven decades of preparation

Charles became heir apparent at age three, when his mother acceded in 1952, and grew up preparing for a job with no start date. He was the first heir to the British throne to earn a university degree, graduating from Cambridge in 1970, and went on to command the minehunter HMS Bronington in the Royal Navy. In February 1970, aged 21, he gave a speech warning of the threat from plastic waste and pollution — an environmental alarm sounded half a century early.

The longest wait for a crown

No one in British history waited longer for the throne. Charles was heir apparent for 70 years and Prince of Wales for more than six decades before acceding on September 8, 2022 — at 73, the oldest person ever to become the British monarch. On May 6, 2023, he was crowned alongside Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey, the first coronation the country had seen in 70 years.

A £7,400 bet on young people

Leaving the Royal Navy in 1976, Charles used his £7,400 severance pay to fund community projects for struggling young people — the start of The Prince's Trust, now The King's Trust, which has since helped more than a million people aged 11 to 30 with grants, courses and mentoring. One early £1,500 grant sent a teenage Idris Elba to the National Youth Music Theatre; in June 2026 the King knighted him at Windsor Castle.
