In 1993, a preteen Beyonce and her Houston girl group Girl's Tyme flew to Los Angeles for the TV talent show Star Search - and lost to a rock band called Skeleton Crew. She later called it a defining moment of her childhood, and twenty years on she sampled the host announcing the loss in '***Flawless.' The group regrouped as Destiny's Child, and by the late '90s songs like 'Say My Name' had made them one of the best-selling girl groups ever, launching her record-shattering solo career.

Thirty-five Grammys and a country crown

Beyonce has won 35 Grammy Awards from 99 nominations - more wins than any artist in history. The one that long eluded her, Album of the Year, finally came in February 2025 for Cowboy Carter, the album that had already made her the first Black woman to top Billboard's country albums chart. On the road she is just as unmatched: the Renaissance World Tour grossed $579.8 million in 2023, and the Cowboy Carter Tour added $407.6 million, the biggest country tour ever measured by Billboard.

BeyGOOD, from Houston floodwaters to Main Street

Beyonce founded BeyGOOD in 2013, and its work is strikingly concrete. When Hurricane Harvey flooded her hometown of Houston in 2017, BeyGOOD partnered with Bread of Life and Texas Southern University to feed and rehouse displaced families. During the pandemic, its Black-Owned Small Business Impact Fund, run with the NAACP, sent $10,000 grants to hundreds of entrepreneurs. Her Homecoming Scholars program has funded students at HBCUs including Xavier, Tuskegee and Morehouse, and the Renaissance tour carried a $2 million commitment to students and small businesses along the route.
