From a red wig to a No. 1 debut

At 15, Ariana Grande made her Broadway debut in the musical 13 - and then spent four years dyeing her hair cherry red every other week to play Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon's Victorious. In between takes she was quietly building a second life as a singer, posting covers online and recording in whatever hours the set schedule allowed. The bet paid off spectacularly: her 2013 debut album Yours Truly opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and critics immediately compared her whistle-register vocals to Mariah Carey's.

Three songs, three top spots

On the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated February 23, 2019, Grande held No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 at the same time - '7 rings', 'break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored', and 'thank u, next' - making her the first act to do it since the Beatles in 1964, and the first solo artist ever. Five years later she conquered a different stage: her turn as Glinda in Wicked, the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical, earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

One Love, and a million hours of therapy

Two weeks after the 2017 Manchester Arena attack, Grande returned to the city to headline One Love Manchester before 55,000 people; the broadcast raised over 2.3 million pounds in three hours for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund, which ultimately raised more than 21 million pounds, and she re-released 'One Last Time' with proceeds going to the fund. She has kept giving since: in 2021 she partnered with BetterHelp to give away free therapy, a program that grew to as much as $5 million in sessions for fans.
