Purdue graduation Countdown
Purdue University has anchored West Lafayette, Indiana, since 1869, when businessman John Purdue's gift launched the state's land-grant college — the school that became the 'Cradle of Astronauts.' Spring commencement fills the 6,005-seat Elliott Hall of Music in mid-May, set for May 14–16 in 2027, with a winter commencement each December. This countdown automatically targets the next ceremony.
How many days until Purdue Commencement?
Purdue Commencement is on Friday, May 14, 2027, which is 306 days away. The live countdown above ticks down to the exact moment, to the second.
From 100 acres to the Cradle of Astronauts
Purdue opened its doors in 1874 with six instructors and 39 students, five years after businessman John Purdue pledged $150,000 and 100 acres to found Indiana's land-grant college. Today it's a global heavyweight in engineering, computer science, agriculture and aviation — with undergraduate tuition famously frozen at 2012–13 levels. The nickname came from an 1891 jab in a rival's newspaper dismissing the football team as burly 'boilermakers'; students embraced the insult. Above all, Purdue is the Cradle of Astronauts: 30 graduates have been selected to fly in space.
What commencement weekend looks like
Spring commencement fills the Elliott Hall of Music, a 6,005-seat proscenium theater slightly larger than Radio City Music Hall. Ceremonies stretch across a full weekend — nine of them honored more than 10,000 graduates in spring 2026 — and every single Boilermaker walks the stage as their name is read. Expect 'Hail Purdue' from the brass, a sea of gold tassels, and long photo lines at the Engineering Fountain and the Unfinished Block P afterward. A smaller winter commencement serves December graduates.
Graduates, class by class
The Class of 1928 sent agronomy student Orville Redenbacher toward popcorn immortality, and the Class of 1932 graduated John Wooden, later basketball's most decorated coach. The Class of 1950 gave America astronaut Gus Grissom; the Class of 1955, Neil Armstrong, first person on the moon; and the Class of 1956, Gene Cernan, the last to leave it. Brian Lamb, Class of 1963, went on to found C-SPAN, and the Class of 2001 produced Super Bowl MVP quarterback Drew Brees.
Planning your trip — and sharing the moment
West Lafayette hotels sell out for graduation weekend months in advance, so book the moment your ceremony date firms up — or look across the Wabash to Lafayette. Spring ceremonies in Elliott Hall are ticketed, with each graduate receiving a set number of guest tickets, and doors open early for security screening, so plan a buffer. Each ceremony runs about two hours. If you're marching in 2027, share this countdown with your roommates, your lab group and your family group chat so everyone lands in town on time.
