Why 'Pomp and Circumstance' plays every single time

Edward Elgar wrote the march in 1901 with no graduates in mind. When Yale gave Elgar an honorary doctorate in 1905, the band played it as recessional music — other schools copied the idea, and within a couple of decades it had become the sound of every American graduation. The tassel move is younger than it looks, too: turning it from right to left after the diploma is a mid-20th-century tradition that spread because it gives every graduate one perfect, photographable moment.
