From Fort Hill to a modern research university

Thomas Green Clemson, son-in-law of John C. Calhoun, willed his Fort Hill plantation to South Carolina in 1888 to create a scientific and agricultural college; Clemson opened as a military school in 1893 and stayed one until 1955. Today it's known for engineering, business and the sciences, plus a dedicated automotive engineering research campus, CU-ICAR, in nearby Greenville. A defining moment came in 1963, when architect-to-be Harvey Gantt peacefully integrated the university — remembered as 'integration with dignity' — before graduating with honors in 1965.

What commencement is like at Littlejohn

May commencement spreads across three days at Littlejohn Coliseum, with roughly 5,000 Tigers graduating each spring in a series of college-by-college ceremonies. Clemson insists on the personal touch: every graduate crosses the stage as their name is announced. Many seniors already wear the Clemson ring — presented at its own dedicated ceremony each semester — and ROTC commissionings nod to the school's six decades as a military college. December brings a compact winter commencement, with nearly 2,000 more graduates crossing the same stage.

Graduates, class by class

The Class of 1923 produced Strom Thurmond, later one of the longest-serving U.S. senators; the Class of 1938 gave Clemson its most beloved veteran, Ben Skardon, a Bataan Death March survivor who returned to teach English for two decades. Harvey Gantt, Class of 1965, became Charlotte's first Black mayor. Broadcaster Nancy O'Dell finished summa cum laude with the Class of 1990, future governor and UN ambassador Nikki Haley graduated in 1994, and quarterback Deshaun Watson completed his degree in just three years, finishing in December 2016.
