The field trip that changed gymnastics

In 2003, a six-year-old on a daycare field trip to Bannon's Gymnastix in Houston started copying the teenage gymnasts mid-workout. The coaches were startled enough to send a letter home suggesting lessons. Raised in Spring, Texas by her grandparents Ron and Nellie Biles, who adopted her after her early years in foster care, Simone trained with coach Aimee Boorman from that day on. Ten years after the field trip, at 16, she was all-around champion of the world.

The most decorated, by a mile

The numbers have simply run out of company: 11 Olympic medals, seven of them gold, plus 30 World Championship medals, 23 gold, more than any gymnast in history. At the Paris 2024 Games she came back to win three golds and a silver. And because rules say a skill is named for the first gymnast to land it at a major competition, five skills across vault, beam and floor are officially called 'the Biles.'

For the kids who grew up like she did

Biles spent part of her childhood in foster care, and she gives back to kids in the same spot. As a national ambassador for Friends of the Children, which pairs vulnerable and foster-care youth with a paid professional mentor for at least 12 years, she helped launch the nonprofit's Houston chapter, put it on a limited-edition Wheaties box, and hosted a Breakfast of Champions celebration in her hometown of Spring, Texas.
