The Times Square Ball Drop happens at the stroke of midnight Eastern on New Year's Eve, ringing in 2027. This countdown ticks down to that exact moment, the most-watched 60 seconds in New York.
Each New Year's Eve, around a million people pack Times Square, and an estimated billion more watch from home, as the famous crystal ball descends its pole during the final 60 seconds, hitting the bottom exactly at midnight Eastern Time.
The first Times Square ball drop took place on December 31, 1907. The ball has been redesigned many times and today is a 12-foot, roughly 11,875-pound LED-and-crystal sphere atop One Times Square.
